Backstory
Born in England in the early 19th century. Basically grew up on ships at sea. Worked at sea. Never really managed to settle down with a wife and kids partly due to his love for the water and his social awkwardness. Nearly died at sea when nothing other than what must have been the Kraken attacked and destroyed the ship. Calvin ended up a long way from home, traumatized, and became the local alcoholic fisherman that talks a lot of nonsense about supernatural creatures he has allegedly met and seen. Well, fuck them, he was friends with what he called a mermaid anyway.
One day in his 50s he nearly died again by being drunk and grumpy while out fishing and tripped. He hit his head badly, fell into the water, and would have drowned, but was rescued by his mermaid. The mermaid healed him, and after that incident, he stopped aging. Whether it was intentional or not, Calvin doesn't know, and he's not sure he wanted it.
What has he done since the 19th century?
I don't know yet. Learned a lot of stuff and collected master degrees, probably. He's into a couple of fields of engineering thanks to both immortality and being a quick, diligent learner.
Extra
He's immortal as in he doesn't seem to age. Maybe he has gained one more wrinkle? Impossible to tell. He could probably be killed like any other person if you tried, but no one has yet.
The mermaid didn't give him gills, but he can hold his breath for a lot longer than even the best freediver.
